CITYPARK is a 22,500 seat open air Major League Soccer stadium located at the terminus of the Mall that extends westward from the monumental Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River in St Louis, Missouri. The owner’s aspiration was to provide not only a forward-thinking seamless match day club, but to build on the current creative energy within the city to create a place that all in St. Louis could feel proud and put a little “swagger” back in St Louis. The architecture reverses the current opaque object stadium typology to create an appropriately scaled, porous volume, open to the city and inviting the city into the park. CITYPARK is more than just a stadium, it is an entire district that incorporates public participation in the 25 acre site with soccer academies, a public pavilion, many community event spaces within the stadium, a large outdoor event space, and other smaller outdoor public venues on the site as well as a monument to Mill Creek Valley residents that were evicted to create the former highway off ramp in the 1950’s.
