Founded in 1851 in Springfield, Massachusetts, insurance company MassMutual continues to thrive under the motto “Live Mutual.” Expanding its presence in Boston, the firm engaged Elkus Manfredi Architects to design a distinctive, modern campus in the expanding Seaport neighborhood. MassMutual’s new LEED-Platinum building was designed to position the company for continued growth with greater access to Boston’s financial markets, diverse workforce, and thriving startup community. The design of the building honors the company’s long history in the state and a contemporary, inspiring work environment that supports its employees. Elkus Manfredi drew design inspiration from the rolling motion of the Boston Harbor adjacent to the building. In contrast to most other buildings in the Seaport neighborhood, the textured surface of 10 Fan Pier Boulevard undulates, giving play to light, shadow, and color as the sun, sky, and sea change. The 345,000 square-foot building is bordered on three sides with a diverse mix of urban uses, including commercial office, research laboratories, and condominiums. Designed to house 1,200 staff members, the 17-story office building offers ground-floor restaurant and retail, and an outdoor public plaza along the Harborwalk and busy Fan Pier Marina. Inside, an activity-based workplace means employees can choose from a variety of environments for independent work, collaboration, and connecting with colleagues, all designed to accommodate hybrid work models.
